Learning is Hard!!

I found this short Pixar film on YouTube and it reminded me of the learning journey some of the children in Room 1 have been on this year.

Sometimes you have got frustrated or annoyed or upset (like the cloud learning to make new baby animals) because learning has been hard for you but together we have been able to find new solutions (like the bird borrowing the helmet and protective gear). ENJOY!

Fireworks

On Friday for art, we made amazing firework pictures using oil pastels.

Then today for writing, we brainstormed words to describe what fireworks look like, how they move and what sounds they make, then we wrote poems about fireworks. Check out our wordle of all the -ing words we thought of. Can you find them in our poems?

Check out our Photostory of our art and poems - some people read their poems and some of our poems are typed.

Mungo the lamb

Mungo the lamb came to school to visit Room 1. She was wearing a collar with a lead and a nappy! She had some milk to drink. She drank it really quickly. Mungo is a Suffolk lamb. She is only 2 weeks old. She had a black face and black legs and her wool looked brown but it will turn white when she gets bigger. We were allowed to give Mungo a pat. Her wool felt soft and fluffy. She has long eyelashes and hard hooves. Mungo the lamb was very cute!

What if . . . Mary had a pet ELEPHANT?!

Today for Thinking Thursday we used the What if? thinking key to talk about what might have happened if Mary had a pet elephant that followed her to school. Here are some of our ideas.

If Mary had a pet elephant and it followed her to school ...

it would smash all the classrooms and it would squirt the people. EQ
it would take me home in the middle of school time. JB
it would give some kids some rides home. They might be able to sit on its back. KCS
I think that he might join the baseball team and use his trunk to hit the ball. SB
it will give me a ride home. HG
it might break the book box shelf and muddle all the books. We wouldn't be able to read from the book boxes. KM
it might stand on peoples toes. It will hurt very, very, very much. EH
it could give the children a ride on its back at lunchtime. CB
it would slide down the muddy hill and the elephant would get muddy. CW
it might squash Mary and it might also mess her desk. She would be angry. AM
it would go in the slide and after that it would go to the swimming pool. KO
it would spray water with its trunk. AH
it will go to the pool and squirt people. RW

What do you think might have happened?

What if our pet followed us to school?

When Mary's lamb followed her to school it was very well behaved and it waited patiently outside for her. But what if one of our pets followed us to school? We did some writing using our ideas. Some of us thought about our own pet and some of us wrote about an imaginary pet.

CV had
a little snail,
it followed him to school
and slimed the window. (Ew yuck!)

LM had a little dog,
it followed him to school,
it went in the classroom and messed it up. (Naughty dog!)

PA had a little cat,
it followed him to school,
it had a sleep in the library and then it played in the garden. (Well behaved cat!)

KB had a little snake,
it followed him to school,
it stayed outside and ate the teachers. (That's horrible!)

BC had a little cat named Rusty,
it followed him to school,
he sat on the grass in the sun and had a nap. (Good cat!)

JR had a little cat,
it followed her to school
and she played outside in the sun. (Another good cat!)

What might happen if your pet followed you to school?

Thinking Hat Thursday - How to fix Humpty Dumpty . . .

Today we put on our green thinking hats to come up with some new ways to try and fix Humpty Dumpty.

We thought the kings horses and men could have:
used extra sticky glue to stick the pieces back together
stuck him back together with lots of plasters
used lots of cellotape to tape him back together
asked Harry Potter to use magic to put him back together
used bandages to put the pieces back together
used super glue to glue the pieces back together
got a nurse or a doctor to sew the pieces back together

Can you think of another way to fix Humpty Dumpty?

Why was Humpty Dumpty sitting on a wall?

Today for writing we came up with some interesting reasons that Humpty Dumpty might have been sitting on the wall. Here are some of our most creative ideas!

I think Humpty Dumpty was sitting on the wall because . . .
he wanted to sit in the sun. He is cold and the sun is hot. PA
he was waiting for a taxi because he was going to the airport. SB
a bird picked him up because he was hungry and he was going fast and he dropped Humpty Dumpty down on the wall. JB
he fell from a tall tree. LM
the aeroplane broke down and he fell on the wall. KCS
he was shopping and then he got lots and remembered that his mother told him to sit on the wall and then he was smiling because he saw his mother. EH

Can you think of an interesting reason why he might have been sitting on the wall? Leave us your idea!

Humpty Dumpty

Do you know what happened to Humpty Dumpty? Who tried to help him? Can you describe what happened in this version of Humpty Dumpty?

Spring has Sprung!!

This morning we went for a walk to look for signs that Spring had arrived. We took photos along the way of all the interesting Spring things that we saw. We even found some sunbathing ladybugs and a very busy buzzy bee collecting pollen!!

Spring on PhotoPeach

When we got back to our classroom, we made a Y chart about all the things we saw, heard and smelled.

JB (who has only been at school for 1 term) did this fantastic piece of descriptive writing all by himself!

On our Spring walk ... we heard a bee buzzing and the bee had black and yellow stripes. It was collecting pollen from one of the flowers. The orange flower was turning white. The grass was sparkly.

Our trip to MOTAT

Yesterday we headed to MOTAT as part of our topic about transport. We saw lots of different types of transport and lots of old vehicles. Check out our slideshow to see some of the photos that we took on our trip.

Then read all about it!

I went to MOTAT on a bus with my Mum. It was fun. We met Fraser. After that we looked at old transport. They used a horse carriage to carry people. It would be fun because you wouldn't need to drive. We looked at buses. Old buses are electric. Next we had lunch. Then we went for a ride to the planes. Then we went home. RW

I went on the bus to MOTAT. When we got there we had morning tea. After we went with Fraser. He took us to look at transport. We looked at a model train. After we had lunch. Then we went off to look at planes. On the bus I had a sleep. JB

On Tuesday I went to MOTAT. Our MOTAT teacher was Fraser and he taught us things about transport. We looked at the fire engine and I learned that they fell off because they had no roof so they made rooves. Then I went on to the transport trail. I looked at the model railway. The little train went out of the tunnel. Then we had lunch. Then we went to the tram station. It was fun riding on the tram. Then we looked at the planes. There were badges. The biggest badge was off a plane. Then we went back to school on the bus. I fell asleep on the way home. CB

On Tuesday we went to MOTAT on a bus. When we got there Fraser was our teacher. We looked at old transport. The motorbike was my favourite. A's Mum took us on the mirror maze and I went on the big black train. Then we had lunch. Next we went on the tram. We looked out of the window. I heard bumpy noises. I went to see the planes. Then we went back to school.

Thinking Hat Thursday

Today we learned 2 new things. We learned about Thinking Hats and we learned how to use voicethread to record our ideas. We used the yellow and black thinking hats to talk about whether or not children should be allowed to drive cars. The yellow hat ideas were the good points and the black hat ideas were the bad points. Have a listen to our voicethread and see if you can think of any more ideas. Leave us some feedback to tell us what you think.

Big Wheels Wednesday

Today we were allowed to bring something with big wheels for Big Wheels Wednesday. We had lots of fun riding around the netball courts (being careful not to crash into anyone!) and talking and writing about our big wheel items. We wrote some similes about how fast we could go. Check them out and leave us a comment to tell us what you think!

My scooter was as fast as a cheetah sprinting for its prey. KCS
My bike was as fast as the strong wind. RW

Motorbikes!

Today all the Pod 1 classes met on the big courts to look at 2 different motorbikes. One was a traditional style and one was more modern looking. We looked closely at each motorbike and some of us took photos of the interesting features. Then we listened to each motorbike to see if they sounded the same or different. When we got back to our classroom, we made a Venn diagram of all the interesting features that we noticed.

Can you use the information in our Venn diagram to work out which photo is of which motorbike?

All About Cars

Today we brainstormed all our ideas about cars and their features. We came up with lots of ideas! Can you think of any other ideas we could add to our wall? (You can use the scroll bars to see the rest of our brainstorm or follow this link click here)

After that we headed outside to look at Mrs B's 1962 VW. We could see lots of things that were different when we compared it to the other cars in the carpark. Have a look at the photos we took. What differences can you see?

Colourful Abstracts

Today for art we had fun creating colourful abstracts. We started by using black crayon lines to divide our paper up. Then we filled in each space using different coloured crayons. Even though we all followed the same instructions, each piece of art looks different. Check it out and leave a comment to tell us what you think!

Small Wheels Day

Today we were allowed to bring something to school that had wheels and was small enough to fit in our hand. We had lots of fun making roads, bridges, tunnels, ramps and buildings for our small vehicles to go over, under, through and into.

Miss T taught us how to use the digital camera to take a photo of our vehicle. Check out the PictureTrail we created using our photos!

Herbie

Today we watched part of the movie Herbie. We made a brainstorm of all our ideas about Herbie.

Then we did some shared descriptive writing about Herbie.

Herbie is a beetle car. He is dirty white with blue and red stripes. He has little round mirrors that stick out. He is old and dirty and rusty and Maggie found him at a car dump. He has the number 53 on his badge.
Herbie made a vroom sound when he was racing. He honked and beeped his horn to tell Maggie things. When he moved his tyres he made a screeching sound.
Herbie is cheeky and he likes to play tricks. Sometimes he is a bit naughty but he is a good friend to Maggie. In the race he shows off and he wants to win. He drives all by himself.

Can you find the ideas from our brainstorm in our shared writing?

Hot Air Balloons

Today for art we started working on making some hot air balloons. We looked at some images of hot air balloons and we watched some clips of hot air balloons taking off. We were amazed at all the different patterns and colours hot air balloons can be. Check out this clip - can you find a bear, a cow and a bee? Which pattern do you like?

We are making our hot air balloons using paper mache. We had to dip strips of newspaper into paste and cover a balloon. We got really gluey!!

Cars

Today we went down to Room 8 to watch a clip about the characters from the movie 'Cars'. We talked about what the characters looked like and what their personalities were like. We made a mindmap using our ideas about 3 of the characters then we used the mindmap to help us do some descriptive writing. This is the clip we watched.

This is the mindmap we did with Room 8.

Here are some excellent examples of our descriptive writing:
Lightning McQueen is red. He had stickers on him. He has smiley teeth. He has big eyes. CW
Sally is shiny and she is pretty. Sally doesn’t like to be dirty. She is blue like the sky. She has a big smiley face. She has 2 big eyes. She has stripes on her wheels. Sally is sparkly and shiny. KM

Lightning McQueen is red. He has got lightning on him. He is really fast. He is a star because he is so fast. Lightning McQueen is winning the race. CB

We like to move it!

This term we are learning about Transport. Our topic is called 'We like to move it!'
We started our topic by brainstorming all the different types of transport we could think of. We had lots of fun using Wordle to record our ideas.
Can you think of any more types of transport?
